These paintings are full of vivd and sometimes unexpected colors. Splashes of bright pink contrast with bright green grass, swaths of red, blue, and yellow create deep, beautiful skies.

The exhibition combines paintings on paper with paintings on panel, emphasizing the spontaneity of Oakden’s work. His brushstrokes have a loose quality that add so much emotion to what would otherwise be a simple landscape.

Harwood’s refers to his watercolors as “Haiku watercolors”, because each painting is composed of only three to five brush strokes. These paintings are beautiful because they are so simple.

“I Took a Line for a Walk” by Steven Lee Davis

In his solo exhibition of fifteen wood block prints, printmaker Steven Lee Davis considers Paul Klee’s quote, “Drawing is taking  a line for a walk”. “I Took a Line for a Walk” is one of our current exhibits Upstairs at Main Street Arts and runs through September 27th.

Davis’ prints fit right in with our gallery space. Your eye moves left to right, following the print’s transformation from unintelligible marks to elegant plant forms, eventually evolving to what appears to be a human face, and finally dissolving into nothingness.

These block prints are viewed sequentially, as the connection of a line. Davis says that the process is doodlish in nature, which is evident in the freeness and flexibility of forms in the prints.

Felted is a show that relies heavily upon textures. The texture of the felt contrasts with the glimmering quality of the beading, which is used to emphasize areas of interest in the images.

Paintings by Joseph (Joe) Tarantelli

Upstairs at Main Street Arts we are currently exhibiting paintings by Joseph (Joe) Tarantelli. This show includes seven oil paintings of scenes in and around the Finger Lakes area.

Tarantelli believes that as a part of nature, it is important for us to appreciate the natural world. His contemporary landscapes are very textural, incorporating geometric lines and vivid colors.

As a plein air painter, Tarantelli feels he is becoming closer to the light and color of the natural world through a refreshing of the senses. Tarantelli successfully aims to rejuvenate the viewer’s natural senses.

One of Tarantelli’s paintings, Oak Tree, is also on exhibit in FLORA, our current juried exhibition of botanical artwork on the main floor.

McKinney and Crandall both create works with lush, intricate surfaces. Whether they do so through thick brushstrokes and texture, or through delicate layering of color and paper, their mark-making is truly beautiful.

Metaphysical Musings isn’t just concerned with what’s on the surface, however. These works also focus on what’s just below or above the surface of what we look at. Metaphysics is a branch of philosophy concerned with explaining the fundamental nature of being and the world that encompasses it, these paintings make reference to this
in various ways.

“Birds in Nature” – Wood Sculpture by Don Howell & Paintings by Mark Stash

Birds in Nature is one of our current exhibits at Upstairs Main Street. Don Howell’s brightly colored bird carvings and Mark Stash’s  tightly rendered watercolor and gouache paintings interplay, combining 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional works in a complementary way.

These two artists may work in different mediums, but their appreciation of nature ties their work together. Both Stash and Howell’s depictions of birds allow us to appreciate their presence in the natural world surrounding us.
