Matt Simon

Mixed Media Artist |  Seattle, WA

Artist in residence September 2018

"My work uses dense, layered, elemental materials to examine the American West, mythologized in the European-American imagination since its ‘discovery’. Growing up in Colorado, my attachment to this place was made possible only by the genocide and displacement of the indigenous people who lived there. In order to think through this history where belonging is

dependent on violence, I create surfaces which invoke a sense of the excavation of time, built up and weathered repetitively like archaeology and stratigraphy, where human and geological history become inextricable."
